Proust, Joseph-Louis
(1754-1826)
   chemist
Best known for establishing the chemical law of definitive proportions, sometimes called "Proust's Law," Joseph-Louis Proust was born in Angers. In 1784, he accompanied jean-françois pilâtre de rozier in a balloon ascent. Later, during a sojourn in Madrid, where he was director of the royal laboratory of Charles IV, he successfully isolated a sugar from grapes (glucose). on his return to France, during Napoléon's continental blockade, he refused to help napoléon i, who wanted to exploit his findings. He was one of the founders of analytical chemistry and, in 1794, published a paper outlining his work and discoveries. It was not until 1811, however, when the Swedish chemist John Jacob Berzelius gave Proust credit for his discovery, that his findings became widely known. Joseph Proust was elected to the Academy of Sciences in 1816.
